What exactly is CCNP?
CCNP stands for Cisco Certified Network Professional — the intermediate-to-advanced tier of the Cisco certification path, sitting between CCNA (entry level) and CCIE (the highest, most specialized and demanding level). CCNP shows that an engineer doesn't just know the basics but can design, implement, troubleshoot, and optimize complex, large-scale enterprise networks.
Key differences between CCNA and CCNP
Depth of content: CCNA covers concepts at an introductory level (e.g., what a VLAN is and how to build one); CCNP dives into advanced detail (e.g., multi-area OSPF, route redistribution between multiple routing protocols, designing redundancy with HSRP/VRRP).
Network scale: CCNA examples are usually a small or medium office; CCNP focuses on large enterprise network scenarios with hundreds of devices across multiple sites.
Exam structure: today's CCNP consists of a Core exam (like ENCOR for the Enterprise track) plus a chosen specialty exam (like ENARSI for advanced routing, or the security/wireless/data-center tracks) — meaning you get to choose your own specialization path.
What topics do you learn at the CCNP level?
Multi-area OSPF and route redistribution
HSRP, VRRP, and GLBP for Layer 3 redundancy
QoS (Quality of Service) for prioritizing sensitive traffic like voice and video
Large-scale enterprise wireless networks
Network automation and basic programming (APIs, Ansible)
Advanced enterprise network security

Who is CCNP right for?
If you have CCNA and are doing day-to-day work on small networks but want to move toward Senior Network Engineer or Network Architect roles, CCNP is exactly the credential that makes that distinction. Why is the CCNP path worth the investment?
The difference in salary and job opportunities between a CCNA-only engineer and a CCNP engineer is usually significant, because CCNP proves exactly the skills real enterprise networks (not just training labs) actually need.
