What Is an SDR and Why Does It Matter for Cyber Security?

Today, more than ever, devices talk to each other over radio waves — from garage door remotes to industrial IoT sensors. An SDR (Software Defined Radio) tool opens a window into this invisible world.

What exactly does an SDR do?
Unlike an ordinary radio receiver that only listens to one fixed band, an SDR device can receive, record, and analyze a wide range of frequencies — all through software, not fixed hardware. That means a single device lets you examine everything from remote controls to general wireless communications.

Its use in cyber security
In a security assessment, an SDR lets you find out whether an unknown or unauthorized radio device exists within an organization's environment, and how secure proprietary wireless protocols (like wireless industrial control systems) really are. This tool is used strictly for **receiving** signals, not transmitting or jamming them.

Receiving signals is unrestricted, but any transmission must comply with your country's radio spectrum regulations. This tool is sold for monitoring and education, not interfering with communications.
