What Is a Faraday Bag and Why Is It Essential in Digital Forensics?

When we talk about penetration testing and offensive security, we usually think of attack tools. But there's one purely defensive tool every digital forensics team should have: the Faraday bag.

How does a Faraday bag work?
Using a special metallic shielding layer, it completely blocks all wireless signals (WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS) — a device inside the bag can no longer send or receive any signal.

Why is it critical in digital forensics?
When a phone or laptop is seized as evidence, the biggest risk is that the device's owner (or an accomplice) sends a remote wipe or lock command. Immediately placing the device in a Faraday bag eliminates this risk entirely and keeps the evidence intact.

The only tool with no special legal restrictions
Unlike the rest of the tools in this store, which are designed for controlled penetration testing, a Faraday bag is purely a protective tool — there are no special legal restrictions on buying or using it.

If you work in digital forensics or incident response, a Faraday bag is available from my site's hardware store.
