What Is a Network Engineer and What Do They Actually Do?

When people hear "network engineer," many picture someone plugging in cables or resetting a router. The reality of this role is far broader, and as someone who has worked and taught in this field for years, I want to give a clearer picture of what the job actually involves.

A network engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting an organization's communication infrastructure — from a ten-person office to a data center with thousands of devices. That infrastructure includes routers, switches, firewalls, wireless networks, VPNs, and increasingly, virtualized and cloud infrastructure too.

The core responsibilities of a network engineer typically include:

Network topology design: deciding how switches and routers are laid out, how VLANs are segmented, and how traffic routes between different parts of an organization.

Configuring and maintaining equipment: setting up routers and switches (Cisco, MikroTik, and similar), managing firewalls, and making sure everything is configured to proper security standards.

Troubleshooting: when the network slows down or drops, the network engineer is the one who has to quickly find and fix the problem — from the physical layer all the way up to the application layer.

Network security: in many organizations, especially smaller ones, the network engineer is also responsible for security — configuring ACLs, segmenting VLANs to reduce attack surface, and monitoring for suspicious traffic.

Documentation: something many newcomers underestimate. An accurate, up-to-date network map is the difference between a two-hour outage and a two-day one.

The path to becoming a network engineer usually starts with the OSI model and TCP/IP fundamentals, followed by certifications like CCNA, and later CCNP or security specializations like CEH and SANS/GIAC credentials. But here's what I always tell my students: a certificate is just the door in, not the destination. What actually makes a real network engineer is hours of hands-on lab work and facing real problems head-on.
