One of the questions my students ask me most often is: "Where do I even start if I want to become a network engineer?" This article is the answer I always give them, this time written out in full.
Step One: Take the fundamentals seriously
Before any certification, you need to actually understand the OSI model and TCP/IP — not memorize them. You need to know how IP addressing and subnetting work, the difference between switching and routing, and exactly what basic protocols like DNS, DHCP, and ARP do. This foundation, without exception, is the most important part of your path.
Step Two: Target the CCNA
Cisco's CCNA certification is the global standard entry point into this field. It covers routing, switching, basic network security, and the fundamentals of automation. My advice: instead of just reading books, set up a lab environment (whether real equipment or simulators like GNS3 or Cisco Packet Tracer) and actually implement everything you learn.
Step Three: Get hands-on experience
No certificate replaces real experience. If you can, start as an intern or at the Help Desk level at a company to get familiar with a real organizational network environment. Real problems — users complaining, a network that goes down at the worst possible time — are something no book can teach.
Step Four: Specialize
After the CCNA, it's time to pick a specialization:
If large enterprise networks interest you, pursue the CCNP path.
If security is more appealing, move toward CEH and then the more specialized SANS/GIAC certifications.
If you're drawn to smaller equipment and local/ISP networks, MikroTik's MTCNA is a good starting point.
Step Five: Don't forget the soft skills
A good network engineer needs to be able to explain a technical problem to a non-technical manager in plain language, document things properly, and stay calm under pressure when everything's on fire. No certification measures these skills, but in the real world, they matter just as much as technical knowledge.
This path isn't short, but every step of it is measurable and real. I've walked this exact path myself, and I still learn something new every day — this field never stops moving.
